One Up One Down

In another great double-header put on by the BSDRL and the BRL, the Hounds hosted Valleys at home.

The Whippets – Premier Grade

Normanby Hounds took on the Valley Diehards in another home game double

header on Saturday 16th of April. The game was fought up the middle, but won on the edges. The Premiers side had a stellar start with a try off a couple of completed sets.  Winger, Andy Launiuvo was on the receiving end of a cut out pass from Marc Webb. One broken tackle later, Andy found himself over in the corner.  Unfortunately the sideline kick proved to be too difficult to convert. Valleys fought back with the assistance of Hounds mistakes and penalties. After 20 minutes, Valleys has worked their way into 10-4 lead.  Once the Hounds regained possession, they built momentum with three quick  scoots and finishing the set off by being handed a penalty. Pressure started to  build as the Hounds continued to attach Valleys line. Two penalties later the  Hounds produced a try off another back line in play which Frosti Tikinau wrapped Josh Woods and fed it out the back to David Smith. David Smith performed a simple draw and pass to put James Caslick across the line in  the corner.

Unfortunately the Hounds points dried up for the half, while the Diehards crossed for a couple. One off an 60m intercept and the other from capitalising on a few Hounds missed tackles. The half was called 18-8 to Valleys. The second half started in an arm wrestle. The Diehards were the team to break  the points drought 20 minutes into the half.  Further effort was exerted in defence to keep the Diehards to one try in the second half, which was drawn to a halt early due to the Diehard's halfback  breaking his leg in the middle of the field. The referee called the end of game. with 9 minutes to go since there was no way to remove the back from the field without further damaging the break.

Normanby Old Boys Points: Luke Chaplin 3, David Smith 2 & Jade Warentini 1

FINAL SCORE Valleys 24 defeated Normanby Hounds 8 (tries Andy Launiuvao, James Caslick)

The Hounds – BRL

The Normanby Hounds BRL side posted their first win of the 2016 season with a  26-16 win over Valleys at Purtell Park. The Hounds backed up a strong showing  from the previous week, with an outstanding defensive display led by stand-in  skipper Tyson Skyring and new recruit Tikiko Noke. The Hounds dominated the first half but were only able to cross the stripe twice through BRL debutante Etipuke Collins and Beau Ryan, to go in at half time ahead 10-0.

The Hounds started the second half with an early try to Mitchell Hallinan of a towering Jacob Thomas bomb. The Hounds scored again through veteran Michael Crosby before clocking off with 20 minutes to go. This gave the opposition a sniff, running in 2 quick tries but the Hounds settled to score again through Mitchell Hallinan to run out 26-16 winners.

Normanby Old Boys Points: 3. Mitchell Hallinan, 2. Tyson Skyring, 1. Michael Crosby.

FINAL SCORE Normanby 26 (Mitchell Hallinan 2, Beau Ryan, Michael Crosby, Etipuke Collins Tries;  Jacob Thomas 3 Goals) Defeated Valleys 16

Vale Joe Webster

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, this morning of Joe Webster. Joe was a Life Member of the Normanby RLFC, having played during the 1960s, including Vice-Captaining the 1961 Premiership Winning Team. He was a big, strong front-rower, a powerful man who never took a backward step. After he hung up the boots, he took an administrative role with the club, serving through the Sixties and Seventies including a term as President. In retirement he was a keen bowler and played with the Normanby Social Bowls Club. He remained passionate about the Hounds and rarely missed a Smoko until bad health caught up with him. He will be sadly missed...

Normanby Open the Season with Two Big Wins

The Normanby Hounds have kicked off the 2016 season with two big wins in both Premier and A- Grade Saturday at Purtell Park.

BRL
The Normanby Hounds BRL side kicked off their 2016 campaign against Carina in Round 1 of the Struddys Preseason Competition. Following on from their strong trial form, the Hounds were keen to impress the large crowd in attendance at Purtell Park.

Bolstered by the inclusion of some quality players as part of the clubs association with the South Logan Magpies and the return of our own inspirational skipper Jack Walters, the Hounds started strongly with new recruit Tyson Skyring leading an unrelenting defensive line. Despite some early drop ball, the Hounds were first on the scoreboard through a bullocking run by Sam Gardel.

With the confidence levels up, the Hounds continued to roll through the middle third through some damaging runs by Gardel and Ben Faulkner allowing halves, Rex Johnson and Marc Jarman, to expose the edges of the Tigers defence. Sticking to coach Treleavan’s game plan, the Hounds were able to run in another 4 first half tries to be up 28-0 at the break.

After the break, the Hounds stuck to their guns despite an increasingly growing penalty count due to growing frustrations within the Carina camp. Ryan Dornan was strong off the bench, rounding off a good front-row rotation that provided the Hounds with a platform to play an exciting brand of footy. With the interchanges reduced to 8, Carina seemed to be struggling with the heat and the physicality and up-tempo style adopted by the hounds, with hooker Jack Walters taking full advantage. Walters ran in 2 tries in the second half to make it a hat-trick of tries for the day. Walters seemed to strike up a solid combination with the halves and half-turned fullback Matthew Currie which should result in plenty of points for the Hounds this season.

Despite being unable to keep a clean sheet due to a late try, the Hounds ran away with the victory with the final score being 58-6.

BRL NORMANBY HOUNDS 58 (Jack Walters 3, Luke Archer 2, Matthew Currie, Anthony Seeto, Tyson Skyring, Samuel Gardel, James Bannerman Tries; Marc Jarman 7, Rex Johnson 2 Goals) Defeated CARINA 6

Normanby Old Boys points:
3. Jack Walters
2. Ben Faulkner
1. Rex Johnson

BSDRL Premier Grade

The Premier Grade Hounds kicked off round 1 of the BSDRL Premier Grade Competition with a strong 46 – 22 win over Carina. The “Whippets” showed they are up for the challenge of competing in the BSDRL’s premier competition for the first time in the club’s history.

Again there were many strong performances across the paddock, however the Old Boys couldn’t go past Sepu Ryder (3) Unaloto Pita (2) and Seb Russell-Sharman (1) as their best on ground.

BSDRL PREMIER GRADE NORMANBY HOUNDS 46 (Josh Wood 2, Beau Ryan 2, Nathan Farragher, Marc Williams, Harlem Theodore, Maximillian Taupo, Graham Leve Tries; Marc Webb 2, Seb Russell-Sharman 2, Beau Ryan Goals) Defeated CARINA 22
